Shoulder pain

Shoulder pain may have many causes. To accurately treat, you need to get to the root of the issue.

Does Sports Therapy help with shoulder pain?

Shoulder issues are one of the most common issues to be seen by a sports therapist. There is very good success with pain relief, and building long term resilience of the shoulder to prevent and limit reocurrance.

What will a Sports Therapy session consist of?

If you are suffering from shoulder pain that has been ongoing for weeks, months or years, then a Sports Therapy session may help relieve your condition. Similar to Physiotherapy, a Sports Therapy session will consist of the following:

  • A thorough assessment to identify the root cause of the pain

  • Treatments to improve range of motion, pain and strength of the shoulder

  • A tailored plan for long term relief which may include specific exercises

Common causes of shoulder pain:

Shoulder pain can be caused by a multitude of reasons such as:

  • Rotator cuff tear

  • Ligament sprains

  • Acromio-clavicular joint

  • Frozen shoulder

  • Bursitis

  • Trigger points

  • Poor posture

  • Arthritis

In your initial session, the Sports Therapist will assess the health and function of the shoulder. This includes all the muscles, ligaments and tendons that work within the shoulder. Specific tests will be used to identify which structures are damaged. This will help guide treatment in the following phases of the session. If necessary, we may refer you for further scans such as MRI.

What treatments will a Sports Therapist do for the pain?

At Function Chiropractic, our initial aim is to recover full range of motion of the shoulder and ensure that the motion is pain free. We achieve this through a structured approach towards treatment. In the session, we will select the most appropriate technique to use on the area such as:

  • Sports Massage

  • Cupping Therapy

  • Rehabilitation exercises

  • IASTM

  • Sports taping

These benefits include:

  • Control swelling

  • Scar tissue remodelling

  • Pain relief

  • Muscle relaxation

  • Improved blood flow

The therapist will apply the treatments to various areas of the body with varying degrees of pressure, some area may feel uncomfortable or sore but the pain from the treatment should neverbe unbearable or get above 6-7/10 on a pain scale. The therapist will communicate with you throughout, so you know exactly what is happening.

How many sessions will I need?

Recovery time will depend on the condition. Initially, you will have a condensed period of 4-6 sessions completed close together, this will bring maximum benefit from the hands-on treatments. In addition, the therapist will work with you to build a personalised exercise program. This program will consist of exercises and stretches that will target the weak areas of the shoulder, improving the health and function of these areas. This will ensure long term relief from the pain and reduce the risk of irritation in the future.

Following improvements in your condition, we will space out your sessions to a more maintenance schedule, which will allow us to stay on top of any flare ups or issues you have throughout the month. We will continually guide you throughout the process, helping you to make changes that will bring positive results to your health. We will help you achieve your goals whether you want to get back into sport or just be able to play with your grandkids without pain, whatever your goal, we will help you achieve it.
